Peru The Great Civilizations, From The North To The South

This program offers a complete circuit, both cultural and archaeological. We will discover the impressive pre-Columbian civilizations of the north and south, such as the Mochicas, the Chimús and the Incas. Magnificent archaeological remains and scenarios that frame this trip, which includes northern Peru, a region that still continues to show numerous finds.

In the morning, visit the Larco Museum, which is located in a beautiful Lima colonial mansion surrounded by gardens, where you can appreciate a careful collection of ceramics, textiles and goldsmith pieces from the most representative cultures of Peru.

The visit ends with the discovery of one of the most complete collections of pre-Columbian erotic art.

Lunch at the restaurant of the Larco Herrera Museum.

Transfer to the airport to take the flight to Chiclayo.

In the morning, visit the archaeological complex of Huaca Rajada, located 35 km east of Chiclayo, belonging to the Moche culture (220 – 800 AD) and visit the Site Museum.

In 1987, the intact tomb of the so-called Lord of Sipán, a Moche ruler, was discovered there and he was buried with all his possessions. Due to the importance and richness of this finding, it is considered the greatest archaeological discovery of the 20th century in America. A replica of the tomb is on the site.

Then departure to the archaeological complex of Túcume, located 33 km. north of Chiclayo, and belonging to the Sicán or Lambayeque culture (1000 – 1370 AD).

Entrance to the site museum where the archaeological findings of the site are exhibited, and where the foundation of the mythical site by the god Naylamp is explained.

The archaeological site, known as the Valley of the Pyramids, is made up of 26 frustoconical adobe pyramids located around the Purgatorio hill, constituting a nucleus of political, administrative and religious power in the region.

Finally, visit the impressive museum of the Royal Tombs of the Lord of Sipán.

The museum was specially designed and built to house the treasures of Sipan. Findings of incalculable beauty and archaeological value found in the Tomb of the Lord of Sipán and other excavations of the archaeological complex of Huaca Rajada are exhibited.

On the way, detour to the town of Magdalena de Cao and continue to the El Brujo archaeological complex.

This extraordinary Moche site (200 – 800 AD) is made up of three large buildings: Huaca Prieta, Huaca Cortada and Huaca Cao Viejo where the Lady of Cao was found, the first female ruler discovered by the Peruvian archaeologist.

Then, visit the Cao Museum where archaeological finds made in the region are on display, as well as the tattooed mummy of the Lady of Cao.

After the visit, continue to Trujillo.

Visit to the Huacas de Moche archaeological complex, located 8 km south of the city of Trujillo.

Impressive urban complex, built in adobe, belonging to the Moche culture (200 – 800 AD) formed by squares, houses and avenues located between the great frustoconical pyramids of the Sun and the Moon.

The Huaca del Sol concentrated political and administrative power, and the Huaca de la Luna was a ceremonial center. In the Huaca de la Luna, the only one open to tourists, you can see impressive friezes and polychrome murals dedicated to the god Aia-Paec.

Visit to the Huacas de Moche Museum, located 200 meters from the Huaca de la Luna. This museum was inaugurated in June 2010 and its structure reflects the constructive tradition of the Moche culture. Inside, three thematic rooms delve into the stages and construction techniques of the Moche culture.

Lunch included.

Visit to Huanchaco, a traditional Trujillo resort and fishing port from where dozens of fishermen leave daily in the famous Caballitos de Totora (reed boats), traditional boats built according to ancestral techniques inherited from the Chimús.

Visit the archaeological complex of Chan Chan (UNESCO World Heritage Site), considered the largest adobe citadel in the Americas and capital of the ancient Chimú Empire (1000 – 1470 AD).

The visit begins with the site museum, then continues through the streets and squares of the archaeological complex made up of ten fortified complexes, including the Nik An Palace.

Return to the center of the city of Trujillo to visit the colonial center. Visit of the Plaza de Armas where the monument to La Libertad is located, as well as beautiful colonial buildings such as the Cathedral and Casa Urquiaga.

Then, a panoramic visit to the Iturregui Palace, a splendid neoclassical residence, currently the latter is the headquarters of the Central Club of Trujillo, the House of Emancipation where the Independence of Peru was proclaimed seven months before it was done in Lima.

Early in the morning, visit the town of Chincheros where you can appreciate the Inca culture in the temples and houses built on the foundations and remains of what was the palace of the Inca Túpac Yupanqui.

On the way, visit Maras and its salt mines, made up of more than 3,000 basins which are crossed by a current of salt water that nourishes them and with the action of the intense sun makes the large salt crystals sprout that are later collected.

Continuation to visit Ollantaytambo, a wonderful Inca archaeological complex that fulfilled agricultural, religious and military functions.

After lunch, transfer to the Ollantaytambo station to take the train to the Aguas Calientes station.

The excursion begins with the ascent by non-private bus (25 min) to the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu (UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage). Visit to the citadel of Machu Picchu, considered one of the seven wonders of the modern world. During the walk you will make several stops where you will be able to appreciate the perfect harmony between the natural environment and the majestic Inca construction.

After the visit, descent by non-private bus (25 min) to the town of Aguas Calientes,

At the appropriate time, transfer to the station and departure by train to Poroy, then transfer by private vehicle to Cusco.

Visit to the nearby archaeological sites, Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puca – Pucara and Tambomachay.

Continuation of the visit to the historic center of Cusco (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Visit the Gothic-Renaissance Cathedral (16th century) which has a large collection of works of sacred art; walk through the streets of the city of Cusco and visit the Koricancha, an Inca temple on which the convent of Santo Domingo was built.

Transfer to Puno in a tourist vehicle, located in the Peruvian Altiplano at an altitude of 4,800 m.

The route will have several tourist stops. The first stop is the church of Andahuaylillas, 39 km south of Cusco. This beautiful colonial temple (17th century) is known as the Sistine Chapel of America for its exceptional murals and its beautiful architecture.

Then departure to the town of Raqchi 110km south of Cusco. Visit the archaeological park of Raqchi where the famous Wiracocha temple is located, an imposing Inca construction whose adobe walls have stone bases that reach a height of 20m. Stop in the town of Sicuani to have lunch on route at a local restaurant.

From there we can observe the change of landscape, going from the majestic Andes to the silent Altiplano. Arrival at La Raya passes at 4,388 m., the highest point of the route, and at the same time the border between the departments of Cusco and Puno.

Last stop at the archaeological site of Pukará at an altitude of 3,910 m.

Arrival in Puno.

Excursion to Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, located at 3,812 m above sea level.

Transfer to the pier in Puno and departure by boat to the island of Taquile  (2h30 of navigation), (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Arrival around noon. Opportunity to appreciate the textile and colorful art of the community. Walking on a white sand beach.

Continuation of the navigation towards the peninsula of Capachica and visit of the community of Santa María to learn about Pachamanca, an ancestral cooking technique. Then, visit the Bio Interpretation Center “Balsero del Titicaca”.

Typical Pachamanca lunch with the locals.

Finally, visit the floating islands of the Uros, artificially built with reeds (reeds), an opportunity to learn about the way of life of this community.

Return to Puno at the end of the afternoon.

At the appropriate time, transfer to the airport to take the flight to the city of Lima.

On the way, visit the site of Sillustani with its funerary tombs that can reach up to 12 meters in height. Discovery also of Lake Umayo which borders the site. Sillustani, belonged to the Kolla culture, between the 1200 and 1450 B.C,  has around 90 inverted cone shaped chullpas. According to history, before the corpses of the highest Kolla authorities were placed in the tombs, they were mummified in a fetal position.

Departure for the visit of the city. Panoramic tour of the Miraflores district, a beautiful district where the most important hotels, restaurants and shops are located, as well as beautiful parks full of flowers and close to the sea. Stop at Parque del Amor, from where visitors can enjoy the magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean. Continuation to the historic center Lima also known at that time as the City of Kings. Visit to the historic center of Lima (cultural heritage of humanity – UNESCO). Tour of the Plaza de Armas and its main attractions. Visit to the architectural complex of San Francisco (17th century) considered one of the most important religious, cultural and artistic centers in Peru. Visit the catacombs and the magnificent Library.

Visit to the Cathedral of Lima, a jewel of colonial architecture that houses unique works of art that are also considered one of the oldest in our city. It also has a museum of religious art with altarpieces dating between the 17th and 19th centuries, choir stalls and a crypt where some of the archbishops of Lima are buried and also in one of the chapels of the conquistador Francisco Pizarro.

At the appropriate time transfer to the airport. Assistance in boarding procedures and international flights.
